1. The most important project ,
The Faculty of Specific Education –Alexandria University , has participated in a change project, in the International Training Program ITP \\\\\\\"Education for Sustainable Development(ESD) in Higher Education \\\\\\\" based on a case study presented by Dr. Mona Sharaf Abdelgalil on the Home Economics Education , and her belief that is the time to revive the home Economics Education to support families and family wellbeing.
2.The objectives and purpose
The project’s aim was to mainstream ESD principles and practices into the teacher education program. The initial targets were to reorient some courses, to develop a crosscutting ESD course for the bachelor and postgraduate Education program and to enroll the ESD in the scientific research plan.
This program seeks to support creative thinking and the development of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) practice in higher education in Africa and Asia, to exchange knowledge and experiences in ESD in the higher education sector. The program deepens understanding of the environmental, social-cultural and economic dynamics of sustainable development. The long term specific objectives of the programme are to contribute to poverty reduction and sustainable development; capacity development and change processes in participants´ institutions and home countries; strengthening of methods, processes and monitoring to enable effective education; and improved institutional infrastructure for ESD.
3. the beneficiaries and target groups: Families, family members, communities and educators
4. Duration one year (Feb 2012- May 2013)
5. Funding under the auspices and sponsorship of Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida).
6. Co-operation partners the program organized by NIRAS Natura AB in collaboration with Swedish Universities, Rhodes
University in South Africa and the UNEP–Tongji Institute of Environment for Sustainable Development (IESD) in China.
7. Monitoring 5 phases of the project :
Phase 1 – Preparations and organizational commitment; Start up discussions at workplace and drafting of an Initial Change project.
Phase 2 – Two weeks scheduled program in Sweden: During phase two the participants exposed to current ESD processes and research in Sweden to exchange knowledge and experience with leading Swedish actors in the field of ESD. Interactive lectures and professional exchange dialogues will be combined with excursions and university visits.
Phase 3 – Intermediate Consolidation Phase; work-based project work
Institutional audit using the Unit-based sustainability Assessment Tool(USAT) , institutional seminar to report on the USAT audit results and the ESD Change Project plan in order to obtain feedback from colleague, stakeholders, managers and the ITP tutor, revision and start up of Change project. progress report presented .
Phase 4 – Two weeks Scheduled programme in SouthAfrica
ESD within an African context . ESD in Higher Education in African countries. Development, finalization and production of the change project , including a plan for implementation , monitoring and evaluation.
Phase 5 – Implementation and reporting “Continued Support Phase”
Change Project implemented, evaluated and improved .Report on results submitted to the ITP programme tutor . Final institutional seminar In presence of the ITP African region Dr.Amanda Hlengwa from Rhoes University.
8. Evaluation : 2 seminare on the family and sustainable development , survey among staff members and stakeholders in the community .
the reoriented courses are [Family health, Household tasks management, Family Economics and consumer Guidance, Home Decorating and its development ,“family Health and the Environment” , The “human rights to water ” A chapter in “consumer rights” addressed to the whole faculty students by Dr.Mona Sharaf.
9. Outcome and Results :
o Enroll the ESD in the scientific research plan of household management program “Master and PhD degrees”;
o A student group ( home economist)has been formed to spread sustainability activities and community engagement ;
o Reorienting some modules for under and post graduate students to include the issues of sustainability and sustainable living;
o Development of a module for undergraduate students titled “Strategies for Sustainable living and family wellbeing (Sustainability Management)”.
o Development of module about “green art and culture” for master degree Department of Art Education.
o Establish a training program for some home economist and home economics school teacher on how to involve the sustainability issues in the home economics lessons for middle and secondary schools.
o Faculty members are now more informed about ESD than at the start of the project.
o 10. Written reports : a report was sent to the ITP coordinator at Rhodes University- south Africa
